Spelthorne Council Gives its Support to Heathrow Expansion

Spelthorne Council Gives its Support to Heathrow ExpansionThe Council held an extraordinary Council meeting on Thursday 16 January to discuss the options for expansion at Heathrow Airport which were published on 13 December by the Independent Airports Commission.

Since 2008, the Council has supported airport expansion in principle. It reaffirmed its support for a further runway to the north west of Heathrow to best meet local and national economic interests and the importance of working with appropriate parties to resolve environmental and transport issues. The Airports Commission had published two options for Heathrow, both of which are to the north west of the airport, and one at Gatwick.

A final report is to be presented to Government no later than summer 2015.

LOSRA has not taken a position on the Heathrow expansion as our membership seems to be pretty equally divided. However we have, on numerous occasions published details of HACAN together with details on how to support this campaign group.

    Hope that helps. Ed

Heathrow was originally developed as an "out of town" airfield. London has grown up around it. It is long overdue to rethink air traffic safety policy. Unfortunately, statistically it is only a matter of time until one of these beasts uses the high street as a landing strip resulting in many hundreds of casualties. At this point we will then re-think air traffic policy and as other more forward thinking nations have already done, develop out of town sites such as Borris Island. Those who scoff at the safety risks should remember the Staines air distaster which would have been far worse had the pilot not been able to manouvre the plane into a field before the crash. For those (including myself) who travel by air, we accept that there is an element of risk each time we fly. But it is not reasonable to subject persons living in the vicinity of Heathrow to the same risks purely because we want to fly over their houses. Take off and landing are the high risk elements to flying which should be carried out over the least populated regions. Not one of the most densely populated in the world. Why does Spelthorne Council continue to go its own way and not support the interests of its residents?

What is LOSRA's view on Heathrow expansion? A lot of people are against it because of aircraft noise, increased traffic, pollution etc. plus the contribution air travel makes to greenhouse gases and climate change. Where possible people should look for alternatives to flying.

The most sensible option is to double the length of the nothern runway & split it to permit landing & take-off. Will mean burying the M25 in a cut & cover tunnel and cumpulsory purchase orders on houses to the south of Colnbrook.
Will also mean that planes will T-off the middle of the expanded northern runway & uses existing terminals.
    No brainer really.
