Hawkedale Infants School Public Meeting,17th June

Rate this item
(3 votes)

Residents in Stratton Road and adjacent streets have expressed concern about the intended expansion from 90 to 210 pupils at Hawkedale School. Whilst it is recognised that existing school capacities are not going to meet the needs of increasing populations especially in the south east, there is anxiety over the adverse impact on traffic and parking in these quiet residential roads.

To answer these concerns, a public meeting will be held at Hawkedale Infants School on Wednesday 17th June at 7pm. All local residents and other interested parties are welcome.

I do not know why there has never been a pedestrian crossing on Stratton Road, this should be made mandatory by schools. As for increasing enrolment, it is and has been a very special school by having a small intake. Too bad this has to change. Catchment is priority number 5 on the admissions list, though most are accepted on this point.

The parking is horrendous down Rooksmead Road, Sunmead Road and Stratton Road at school drop off/pick up times. The proposed increase of children attending Hawkedale will have an immense effect on local residents. Many children are driven to school these days, so the parking problem/congestion will only get worse!! I have witnessed 'road rage' with the current amount of cars within the vicinity of Hawkedale - I dread to think what will happen if the area has to deal with so many more vehicles!!

The Head Teacher at Hawkedale Infants School has been in touch with LOSRA and I have her permission to reproduce her email here:
"I would just like to make clear that the public meeting at Hawkedale Infants on the 17th on June at 7pm is the educational consultation meeting. The planning(including transport) meeting will take place in the Autumn term 2015". Ed.

Lol Ben. Even the secondary school children get driven to school, so very much doubt children from 8-11 will walk. Thats very hopeful and just wont happen. The only access from round the back of Hawkdale would mean going through the horse stables at the back, so doubt thats an option either :-(

Sunbury desperately needs more school places. The new developments going on will only exasperate the issue further. This will still be a very small school. Only one intake of 30 per year.

I appreciate residents parking concerns. As the school has a very small catachment area, more children should be walking with their parents to school to ease parking problems.

Another possibility would be changing the access point. Could there be a gate that gives access to the school by London Irish instead of Stratton road? I think the nursery on site may be causing more parents to drive as there isn't a catchment area for it.

Chennestone School has two access points and it works very well and eases traffic considerably.

    4 things:
    - In an expanding population within Sunbury this is the least worst option

    - The council need to tackle antisocial parking from parents - this is the current as well as future situation so this planned change is irrelevant on this point

    - It will still be relatively small, and the older intakes of children should be making their own way to school anyhow. No 10 year old living in Sunbury should be getting a lift to school!

    - Expanding places in a good school should be above peripheral issues like parking and traffic, especially if the real impact is likely not to be that much more than the current situation
