Surrey County Council's Double Standards?

Rate this item
(10 votes)

Surrey County Council's Double Standards?Surrey County Council has refused permission for the Weylands Waste treatment plant in Walton citing:

"The applicant has failed to demonstrate factors which either alone or in combination demonstrate ‘very special circumstances’, which clearly outweigh the harm to the Green Belt by virtue of the harm to openness, inappropriate nature of the development and the other harm from noise, traffic and air quality impacts. The applicant has not produced a robust alternative site assessment or demonstrated that the site would be well related to the source of waste arisings it would receive. The proposal therefore does not accord with the National Planning Policy Framework 2012, Policy CW6 of the Surrey Waste Plan 2008 and Elmbridge Borough Core Strategy 2011 Policy CS1."

It is interesting to note that the County Authority is using in its grounds for refusal the same objections as were advanced by Spelthorne Council and its residents to the construction of an incinerator at the Charlton Lane Recycling Centre, (aka the 'Eco Park'). The Weylands waste treatment plant would have been more efficient than Charlton Lane; and would have used tried and tested technology, unlike the untested, experimental technology approved for Charlton Lane.

It seems that there are two different standards being applied, depending on which side of the river you live.

The term Eco Park is the EU's terminology forced on all 26 nations, i.e. in Spain they are Eco Parques. Much prefer to see the British terminology used. Surrey views Spelthorne as an area forced on them by boundary changes. Best that we revert to Middlesex.

Spot on, don't like sheep carry on voting Tory, which I know for a fact a lot of the leading anti Eco Park people do

If you do, do not complain ever again. Profit at the expense of safety is Tory nirvana

I agree with Paul's comments. I would like to ask all residents in Spelthorne, especially in Sunbury,to please relay their views to the current Conservative councillors who no doubt will be knocking on doors, for votes, for the European Elections next week and also next year's General Election. This is the only way they will listen to residents, at the door and through the ballot box. If they don't I am sure that other councillors from
different parties will make themselves available to listen.

'Double standards' is an extraordinarily polite way of putting it, which frankly, SCC don't deserve. The NIMBYs in Walton clearly have more influence on their Councillors than do Spelthorne residents.Or perhaps the Walton Councillors are more willing & able to stand up for their constituents?
