Rivermead Island Stream Cleared

Rate this item
(4 votes)

First reported on this Site in September 2009, we can now report good news for those who have been concerned with the spread of aquatic vegetation in the stream separating Rivermead Island and Thames Street. After many months of campaigning by LOSRA the Environment Agency has now started a major clearance of this suffocating and unsightly obstruction to water flow. The photos illustrate the state of the stream before and after work began (though the seasonal algae in the latter somewhat detracts from the visual effect) .

Your attention to this is much appreciated. However, further upstream we are really struggling. Neighbours have cleared their reach but the rest of the river is not accessible by others. so my family and I have worked every weekend to clear the weeds and load them onto our jetty. This Monday I have 12 bags to transport. I do not have a car and have to ask help from friends and family.
There are another 24 bags of work to be done. Please can I have help in taking these to the recycling unit.

Many thanks to those who instigated and followed through with the proposal to clean up the stream.
It was truly heartbreaking to see such a disgusting mess. The crew who carried out the work did a splendid job. For some reason we still do not have a flow of water from the main river, if we did much of the stuff accumulated in the stream would wash through.
