PC Caroline Barnes has issued the following crime alert to all residents, together with advice on how you, or an elderly relative or friend can avoid falling victim to a vile crime such as this.
Dear Resident
On Saturday 27th February 2010 an elderly resident who lives in Lower Sunbury, who lives alone, had a bogus caller knock at the door. The caller was a well-spoken and well-dressed man in his 40’s, who gained entry to the house on the pretext of collecting some books. Once in the house he brazenly went around the house, opening drawers and cupboards and left with a number of items, including jewellery.
As you can imagine the resident was very upset by the experience.
In an effort to try to prevent this from happening again to another resident we would ask that you read and act on the following crime prevention advice:
Crime prevention advice: Distraction burglars
Surrey Police is working hard to make the elderly and vulnerable aware of the methods used by distraction burglars and bogus callers. Residents can help by following a few simple rules to avoid becoming a victim of distraction burglary.
LOCK:
- Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home.
STOP:
- Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting anyone.
- Check that you have locked any back doors and taken the key out.
- Look through the spyhole or the window to see who it is.
CHAIN:
- If you decide to open the door, put the chain or bar on first.
- Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. (Normally, when the door is shut and locked, leave the bar or chain off in case you need to get out in an emergency)
CHECK:
- If someone who looks official calls at your door, always do the following:
- Ask for and carefully check their identity card, even if they have a prearranged appointment - all genuine callers will carry one.
- Close the door while you do this.
- heck the caller matches the photo on the card and, if it is a prearranged appointment, their name is the same as the one on the letter.
- Look up the company phone number in the phone book or call directory enquiries and check it against the card the caller has given you.
- Do not ring the number on the card as it may be a fake.
IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS, KEEP THEM OUT
- If you have any doubts about the caller tell them to call back later when someone can be with you or to contact you by letter to arrange a more convenient time.
If you wish to discuss your personal crime prevention needs then please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Lower Sunbury Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Please share this email with your family, friends and neighbours to ensure that as many people as possible are aware of the above advice.
Kind Regards
